Essentially it functions as a tutorial for the whole multiplayer experience this game is known for. The singleplayer also gives you an opportunity to learn and get acquainted with the mechanics of the game, different characters, the game modes, etc. It gives an identity to the plants and the zombies that you interact with, making the experience rewarding for the fans of the franchise. It's pretty funny and appropriate for the single player storyline. They are not necessarily realistic, but the cartoonish animations and special effects are done beautifully. If you have the hardware, the graphics are pretty darn good too.
